Pet Peeves: Pet Conflicts, Compliance, and Compassion in Condo Communities

Pets are often a source of both joy and conflict in condominium communities. This session, facilitated by Erin Berney of Field Law, will explore the legal and practical considerations boards face when managing pet and other animal related issues.

Topics include distinguishing service and support animals from pets, crafting enforceable bylaws and rules, navigating licensing and behavioral concerns, and addressing exemptions under the Human Rights Act and other legislation. Through real-world stories, legal insights, and communication strategies, participants will gain practical tools—including a decision-making flow chart and resident communication tips—to help boards manage pet issues responsibly, fairly and effectively.
